The CSO has released figures showing that there were 67,462 births in Ireland in 2014, 1,468 fewer than in 2013. 24,490 of these births are listed as having been born outside of marriage or civil partership, a figure that has remained steady over the last 6 years.
The number of births peaked in 2009 at 75,554 but has dropped steadily since.
Around 185 people were born every day in Ireland in 2014.
The figures also show that the average age of first time mothers this year is 30.5 whilst the average age of all mothers giving birth was 32.3 years which is higher than last year. Almost 64% of of the 67,462 births registered in 2014 were to women aged between 30 and 39, whilst 248 were born to women over 45.
Meanwhile, Jack and Emily were the most popular babies’ names in 2014. Jack continues to be the most popular boys’ name for the 8th year in a row and Emily is the top girls name for the 4th successive year.
