Today is World Book Day, Ireland’s biggest event promoting the enjoyment of books & reading. Over 1,000,000 free tokens will be given to Irish children in 2015.
The main aim is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with an opportunity to have a book of their own. This may sound like a very simple idea, but unfortunately, many children do not have access to books in their homes.
It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
World Book Day Ltd. is in fact a registered charity that is financed mainly by publishers as well as participating booksellers who fund the entire cost of the Book Token redemption.
The Department of Education here in Ireland is responsible for sending all material, including Book Tokens to the various schools. If your school is taking part, your child should receive a Book Token.
